Villa San Remigio’s owners have recently changed. The new owners allow to make use of the villa only when they don’t use it. Because of the affection they feel for their ‘nest’, they would like to accommodate a limited number of guests. To make the property even more comfortable, the new owners are gradually improving the Villa personalizing it. Villa San Remigio is located in the most beautiful area of Lake Maggiore, ‘the Castagnola promontory’, just north of the Borromeo Islands, where the view encompasses the entire lake from north to south. Because of its size, location and historical importance, Villa San Remigio is perhaps the most important mansion of Lake Maggiore. It was built at the end of 1800 to live the dreams of love between the Marquis Silvio della Valle di Casanova, poet and musician, and Sophie Browne, painter, who wanted to build here “the garden of dreams”. Unfortunately, the actual villa was acquired by the Italian State in the 60’s and is now inaccessible, hosting only bureaucrat’s offices. Only the waterfront portion of the park with the old private chapel of the villa, overlooking the lake, remained private and was transformed into a unique modern house of great charm. The garden has been renewed recently, after decades of neglect and is now a small botanical garden, inspired by the atmosphere of the adjoining Gardens of Villa Taranto, the greatest Italian botanical gardens, neighbouring with San Remigio.
Staying in San Remigio means embracing the lake from every window of the house; strolling through a park rich in centuries-old trees and fragrant flowers, which winds for 300 meters along the lake shore; bathing and sunbathing on the private beach or by the pool, relaxing in the whirlpool tub; breathing the air of the two large parks of Villa San Remigio and Villa Taranto, over 30 hectares of greenery that, together with the lake and the Alps, are the only things in sight from the house; having lunch in one of the equipped outdoor areas, real open-air dining rooms; reading a book or listening to music on the lakeshore or on the large nineteenth-century circular seat where Marchesa Sophie loved to spend time contemplating the lake. For all this, it is possible to rent the lakeside property for short tourist stays, with all the equipment and the established setup of the house, which will make your stay much more comfortable, exclusive, and charming than the best hotels.
